Mara Smith is a certified athletic trainer, certified strength and conditioning specialist and award winning fiber artist.  She uses her knowledge of the human body and injury prevention to help people feel and perform their best. During the Covid 19 Pandemic, Mara merged her crafting and athletic training skills to create “Stretches for Stitchers” an online stretching class geared toward crafters. She also became a virtual instructor for Vogue Knitting Live and Floxie where she educates her students about common crafting injuries and the importance of proper ergonomics, stretching, and exercises geared specifically toward knitters and crocheters. Mara has also been a guest speaker/lecturer for organizations and fiber studios including Gather Here and Make Something, Knit in the Pit, the Knit for Food Knit-Along and Down Cellar Studio’s Knit a-long events. Her students often comment that her classes are not only engaging and fun but that they should be mandatory for all crafters to help them prevent knitting injuries. Mara is the Senior Athletic Training Liaison at Mass General Brigham Sports Medicine and Off-Ice Coach at Gate City Figure Skating Club. She loves attending fiber festivals and seminars and is passionate about sharing her knowledge of the human body with other fiber artists.

Testimonials

"Hi Mara, I've been meaning to let you know how much I enjoy your Stretches for Stitchers class.  It makes me set some time aside every week to do something really important.  I was starting to get hand issues from knitting. One day it was really really bad and the next day after class they felt so much better. Thank you again, your class is awesome,"

"I just want to tell you how much I enjoyed the class yesterday! I feel like it has lifted my mood in general and made me feel more positive!"

“Thanks so much, Mara. I appreciate having a better sense of our musculature and structure, and why that matters to our crafting. My job everyday is at a desk on a computer so the stretches and massage techniques will reall help."

"Mara is so knowledgeable! Super Friendly. I learned stretches that I have never done before and now I know to stretch my body and sit properly so I can do my favorite thing in the world: knitting!"

"Great Suggestions for stretches, posture and ergonomics."
